Youth Culture: 1900 to Present: East and Southeast Asia

Youth culture in east Asia is marked by its dynamism and vibrancy, which is set against the backdrop of rapid economic development in the region. The economic boom in Japan followed by the rise of the four Asian Tigers (Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore) and the current rise of China brings about the necessary technological developments and a level of affluence among east Asian youth. How the youth respond to these changes, however, is diverse and a matter of much debate. A number of important trends can be delineated from established literature on east Asian youth culture. First, although the youth look toward the West for the latest shifts in youth culture with regard to music, fashion, and so forth, they are not similar to youth culture in the West.
